Κάτω τα χέρια από τη Villa Amalias! - Villa Amalias statement.

Villa Amalias statement: we are, and we shall remain here.

Greek original at the Villa Amalias site
Today, on December 20th, 2012, the police raided Villa Amalias. Under the pretext of a complaint for drug dealing, they searched the building in the presence of a district attorney. Their findings are ludicrous. Nevertheless, according to Dendias [translators' note: the minister of public order] these prove that Villa was an “epicentre for lawlessness” for 22 years and that the law, thanks to the “brave political will of [PM] Samaras” was finally restored.
What logical leap may brand empty beer bottles as “materials for the construction of molotovs?” Is it strange to have a large number of empty beer bottles in a place that hosts a concert [gig] space and a café? What comprises a “flammable material”? May they be referring to the cleaning liquids for the printing press that operates in the squat? Should we talk about the gas masks that should be carried by every demonstrator that respects their health? Should we talk about the elementary means of self-defense (the mock flash bangs, slingshots etc) in a space that has repeatedly been attacked by para-statist gangs (arsons, stabbings, beatings) with the apogee reached in 2008, when the then minister of public order Markogiannakis visited the “residents” of Agios Panteleimonas and a few minutes after he left, we were attacked…
Under the pretext of the search, then, they materialise a long-standing wet dream of theirs: their raid into a space that is one of the spatial symbols of all those who stand in hostility against anything that represents sovereignty, imposition, sterilization, indifference, surrender, subjection. In this they are right. That’s who we are. Us and the thousands of demonstrators, the people in struggle, squatters, strikers, people fighting in the streets. We are the homeless, the punks and the rebels, the vegetarians and the feminists, the nocturnal ones and the workers, poor and the aggrieved, the victims of racism and the avengers of injustice. The minister called us an epicentre of lawlessness…
And now we should talk seriously. Villa Amalias is an organising proposition which had to be dealt with at the time of the cannibalism of the memoranda. The onslaught of capital against the world of labour presupposes the destruction of all of its structures: the depreciation of everything that trade unions had gained, whatever structures of solidarity and dissent, the self-organised incentives: everything is targeted. The far-right agenda that has prevailed since the outbreak of the crisis commenced with the statement concerning a [supposed] hygiene bomb by Loverdos [trans. note - Loverdos was minister of health at the time and claimed that the 300 migrant hunger strikers comprised a “hygiene bomb” in the centre of Athens] against the hunger strikers of Ypatia. It continued with the targeting of migrants (at the Evros border wall, concentration camps and the Xenios Zeus [anti-migrant] operation), the pillorying of addicted seropositive women, aided by the far-right violence against migrants, homosexuals and street traders. The torturing of anti-fascists at the police HQ after the anti-fascist motorcycle demo, the attacks against squats and the harsh repression against any labour or social demand, leave little doubt for the fact that the enemy has put together a solid block; a block against which we must now resist.
For the past 22 years we have been in a building that was abandoned for decades. We maintain it and breathe life into it. We are a squat that always has its doors open to groups, individuals and incentives that promote the anti-commercial culture, human dignity, social, anti-fascist and class struggles. Villa Amalias is giving a fierce fight –– not in order to protect a dozen pillars, but in order to protect our desires, our dreams and our hopes for a more free life for everyone.
We call everyone who identifies part of themselves in the years-long operation of the squat to partake in this crucial struggle with us.
This is the windmill that the executors-don quixote’s have attacked, even though it is ideas that they are after. These are what are lawless and illegal for them. Their witch-hunt will bring them nightmares in response.

A lot of blocked files!

A lot of the records i uploaded via Mediafire are now blocked... Not only world known records like these of Wipers, or Jeffrey Lee Pierce, but also records from greek bands released only in vinyl in limited number of copies !!!
Most of my uploads were ripped from the original vinyl record. The meaning of the upload was to spread the work of bands i love and to push people to buy the vinyl records because i'm a vinyl lover myself.
So, almost half of the links are now dead... You can make your own thoughts of course about that and i have mine... I won't try to reupload these records in some other file hosting .
So the blog is now sloooowing down.
No more uploads (almost - because i happen to have some records that i'm sure they won't be blocked) but i'll try to post thoughts, news, stories, poems, pictures, links, and i don't know what else...
Anyway, thank you all for your love and support (though i'd like to have more comments...)
See you here sooner or later...
George

Clock DVA - Advantage (LP, vinyl rip). 1982.

Vocalist and composer Adi Newton created Clock DVA in 1978 in Sheffield, as part of post punk - industrial music scene of  England of that time. With a bright mix of dark noir-ish music, industrial, jazz, cold funk and post punk they became one of the biggest names of the industrial scene.
This is their third work, after a tape in Throbbing Gristle's record label and their first record "Thirst" in 1980.
"The only album released by Clock DVA's second lineup, "Advantage" is near the band's best. Though there aren't many synthesizers, the focus on jarring tape procedures and noise well into the red lines makes for an intense set of songs, enlivened by Adi Newton's evolved vocal style. The atmosphere is bleak and noir-ish". (from Allmusic)
This is one of post punk's masterpieces and one of my favorite records ripped from vinyl to mp3 (320).

1. Tortured Heroine
2. Beautiful losers

South Of No North - Rajah (LP, vinyl rip). 1992.

South Of No North is the most beloved and most inspired among the greek "darkwave" bands. Their story begins back in the early '80's and continues till now.
Four excellent LP's and a lot of gigs made them a living legend and one of the best European bands in my opinion. For more about them, see this blog.
This LP is a collection of unreleased tracks recorded between 1985 and 1991 and it was released by Wipe Out records in 1992.
From the sound of Bauhaus to the sound of Japan there is a lot of space and South of No North are moving in this space with enthusiasm and original inspiration. I believe that this record is one of the best darkwave records ever released in Europe!
Most of you already have it of course, but for those of you who don't, this is a gift of love!

Lydia Lunch - Honeymoon in Red (LP, vinyl rip). 1987.

This is the legendary collaboration between Lydia Lunch and members of The Birthday Party back in 1982
There are 2 songs sung by Nick Cave and Lydia Lunch. Rowland Howard plays guitar on the entire album and Tracy Pew is on bass. The other musicians are Thurston Moore guitar (on "So your Heart"), various drummers and Genevieve McGuckin playing piano.
The original sessions were recorded in 1982 but in 1987 Clint Ruin re-mixed the tracks and the songs were released by Widowspeak records under the title "Honeymoon in Red". Ruin also worked on treatments and added noises in some tracks.

Morrissey and Siouxsie - Interlude (7" single, vinyl rip). 1994.

This is a majestic '60's lovesong covered by two of the best voices of our time. It was released as a vinyl single in 1994.
"Interlude was recorded during the recording sessions for Morrissey's "Vauxhall and I" album, and was produced by Morrissey guitarist and musical director Boz Boorer.   The original version of the song was recorded in 1968 by the female singer Timi Yuro as the title track for the film of the same name and it's written by George De La Rue and Hal Shaper.
Morrissey first contacted Siouxsie in the early 90s with a view to recording a duet with her. In 1993 he sent her a tape with some potential songs he had selected. All were numbers initially sung by female singers like Nancy Sinatra and Dionne Warwick. Siouxsie picked this ballad and Morrissey agreed.
The sessions went well and Boz Boorer later described his collaboration with Siouxsie as "complete joy".
"Interlude" was later included on a compilation called "Suedeheaded. The best of Morrissey".  A previously unreleased version of the song, featuring only Morrissey's vocals, is on his 2011 "Very best of" compilation". (from Wikipedia).
"Two heroes enterwine their voices - Siouxsie's torchily rich, Morrissey's expansively wobbly - for a song about romance that actually doesn't sound doomed." (Spin Magazine).

The artwork in the front sleeve is a vintage photo ("Girl jiving" - 1957) by Roger Mayne and the photo above is the same girl of course - the title is "Girl, Southam Street"(Morrissey has used a lot of his work for concert backdrops, record sleeves and press-adverts).
The record includes two versions of the song. It's ripped from the original vinyl record to wav.

28th Day - S/T (LP, vinyl rip). 1985.

Excellent San Fransisco neo-psychedelic classic from Barbara Manning's first band. Most of the songs are written by Cole Marquis, another popular figure of West Coast's  indie rock scene.

It's the post-Paisley Underground era and 28th Day gives us one true psychedelic diamond with songs that combine dizzy guitars, melodic vocals and a powerfull rythm base.
Some of the songs here are all time classics. Just listen  to "This Train", "I'm only asking" or "Pages turn" and get lost in the hallucinogenic psychedelic world of 28th Day!

"This is one of those albums that did absolutely nothing upon its release but has developed a certain cult cachet over the years...
songs like the ruminative "Pages Turn" and the swirling, neurotic "25 Pills" suggest that Chico, CA, was the one city in the Northern Hemisphere that was attuned to the Krautrock-inspired art pop of New Zealand's Flying Nun label.
The album's high point is the tense, strangled "Burnsite," a Manning song that climaxes in one of the most anguished screams this side of Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures". 28th Day broke up shortly after the release of this album." (from allmusic)

This is one of the records i grown up with and it was a great company for many many strange hours...

Xmal Deutschland - The Peel Sessions (12" EP, vinyl rip). 1985.

An all girl line up, ghoulish shrieks and dark dance beats surrounded by dreamy keyboards.
Xmal Deutschland formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1980 and only two years later they opened for The Cocteau Twins in London.
They gained a large group of enthousiastic followers and they became much more than a cult band. They signed to the 4AD label and gradually they changed their doom rock sound to a lighter but still eerie direction.
Their fourth and last LP "Devils" was a disappointment with a mainstream pop sound and this was the end of this band but they will always be remembered for their first three LPs ("Fetisch"- 1983, "Tocsin"- 1984 and "Viva" - 1987), records which were real gifts for the dark music scene of the '80's.

This EP was recorded for the radio show of the famous dj, producer and journalist John Peel in April 30th 1985 in Radio One - BBC and they are original live in studio recordings made exclusively for this radio show. There is a huge list of bands who recorded for John Peel and they released these songs in vinyl by Strange Fruit records - the famous "The John Peel Sessions". For the catalog take a look here.

Julian Cope - Fried (LP, vinyl rip). 1984.

One of the absolute psychedelic masterpieces of all times!
A few months only after the release of his first solo work ("World Shut Your Mouth", 1984), came this strange (what a cover!) psychedelic record with some acoustic space songs and some electric and semi-electric diamonds.
Musician, writer, historian, and cosmic shaman Julian Cope was born in October 1957 in Deri, South Glamorgan, Wales. He formed the Teardrop Explodes one of the more influential bands of the late '70's playing a volatile mix of neo-psychedelic rock and electro-pop.
By 1984, Cope's love of hallucinogenics -- as well as a toy car collection that occupied nearly an entire year of his life -- was at an all-time high. Despite his altered state, he released World Shut Your Mouth, his solo debut on Mercury Records.
Not to be deterred, Cope retreated to Cambridge and recorded the follow-up, Fried, a chilling chronicle of self-oblivion that included cover art of the artist in a sandbox wearing nothing but a gigantic turtle shell.

The spirit of Syd Barret is alive!

Human Puppets - T.V. Eye / Human Puppets (7" single, vinyl rip). 2010.

Human Puppets is a greek minimal synth / darkwave band from Athens. Active since 2004, they have 2 vinyl singles and 2 LP's untill now.
They remind me the best moments of the synth punk and minimal wave of the 80's and they are highly inspired by the greek scene of that era.
They started as a duo (Nikos K., Stathis L.) and a drum machine but they use a real drummer sometimes.
All of you out there who are in love with the new wave of the '80's will be impressed by this band.
This 7" single was released in 2010 in limited number of copies (300) in vinyl only by 5th-Floor_Entertainment label and it's their third release, after the single "Untittled" (2005) and the LP "The future from the past" (2006).
Their last release is the LP "Sounds of Solitude" (2011).

Silent Moves - Silence is moving fast / All we see ( from "Sounds and noises of the SKG " compilation). 1984

Silent Moves was a greek new wave band from Thessaloniki.
Their only vinyl appearance was 2 songs for "The Sounds and Noises of the SKG compilation" in 1984. Their music could be described as dark synth pop.
Asklepios Zambetas - a very well known guitar player from Thessaloniki (see Trypes) was the singer.
Check this post for more informations about this great musician.
There is something very strange about these songs. You can hear them over and over again and finally find yourself trapped in their strange melodies and melancholic atmosphere. And then you want to play them again!
Unfortunately i don't have the vinyl record so i downloaded the compilation from the net in mp3 form. Enjoy two great songs from the heart of the '80's!

Rockin' Bones - Broke / Hard way to learn (7" single, vinyl rip). 2007

Rockin' Bones is a fantastic punk'n' roll band from Greece
Alive and kicking since 1992 they survived through hard times (their guitarist Konstantinos "Fuzzy" Papahronis died in a car accident in 2008).
Their music is inspired by all the good punk and rock'n' roll music, from Iggy Pop and The Ramones to The Rancid and Social Distortion and Motorhead.

This vinyl was released in 2007 and it contains two excellent punk songs. Get ready for mind blowing speedy rock!

The Durutti Column - Another setting (LP, vinyl rip). 1983.

Another record in Autumn mood.
The Durutti Column was primarily the vehicle of Vini Reilly, a guitarist born in Manchester, England, in 1953.
He started with the punk band The Nosebleeds (after Reilly left the band he was replaced by Billy Duffy - later in Theatre of Hate and The Cult - also Steven Morrisey, later singer of The Smiths joined The Nosebleeds around that time!).
In 1978 he joined Factory Records playing guitar and singing for The Durutti Column.   Band's name was inspired by the Spanish Civil War anarchist Buenaventura Durruti and a Situationists Internationale comic strip of the 1960s.
Gradually the band became the personal vehicle of Vini Reilly offering some of the pure masterpieces of the post punk era.

"Another setting" is band's third LP and one of the finest! Reilly's elegant guitar melodies mix with hypnotic vocals and dreamy sounds of the keyboards creating music that brings film images in mind.
A plus in this record is the amazing song "Smile in the crowd", known by the cover of Depeche Mode's Martin Gore in his "Counterfeit" EP (1989).

Eyeless in Gaza - Rust Red September (LP, vinyl rip). 1983.

The right record for the right time of the season! This is the fifth full vinyl album for this strange duet from England.

More calm comparing with their previous records, with a dreamy, airy pop feeling running through the album. Catchy melodies and complex rhythmes along with the melodic singing by Martyn Bates and dreamy soundscapes from the guitars and the keyboards create the perfect soundtrack for September.

See also this post for more informations about this excellent band and check the "Caught in Flux" record which is there for downloading.
"Rust Red September" is one of the top albums that this band ever created! Songs like "Only Whispers" or "Pearl and Pale" or "Changing Stations" will stay in your heart for ever!

"wearing your brand new shoes in
wanting to walk and run
in every solitary lane,
every road that leads you
wherever your feet may take you
that's where you will parade...

with nothing between you and your smile
nothing that anyone can pin you by,
knowing that whatever's coming
you're changing stations today"

Ian Mc Culloch - September song (7" single, vinyl rip). 1984.

September's here and the days are becoming shorter...
This is the first cloudy and rainy day here after almost two months of heatwave (above 40)!
Let's welcome this beautiful season with an excellent song written for the occasion!
This single is the very first release by Echo and the Bunnymen's singer Ian Mc Culloch. In 1984, right after their "Ocean Rain" LP, he released this cover to Kurt Weill's classic song "September song" (first public performance in the 1938 Broadway musical  Knickerbocker Holiday).
It has since been recorded by numerous singers (James Brown, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Robert Wyatt are some of them).

The wonderfull classic Irish song "Molly Malone" or "Cockles and Mussels" is on the b-side. The song tells the fictional tale of a beautiful fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night.
In contrast she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street-hawkers of her day.
In 1988 the Dublin Millennium Commission endorsed claims concerning a Molly Malone who died on 13 June 1699, and proclaimed 13 June to be "Molly Malone day". The city of Dublin made a statue of Molly Malone in 1988.

Have a nice Autumn!

The Fall - Living too late (EP 12", vinyl rip). 1986.

Out of all the late-'70s punk and post-punk bands, none were longer lived or more prolific than The Fall
Throughout their career, the band underwent a myriad lineup changes, but at the center of it all was vocalist Mark E. Smith. With his snarling, nearly incomprehensible vocals and consuming bitter cynicism, Smith became a cult legend in indie and alternative rock.
Over the course of their career, The Fall went through a number of shifts in musical style, yet the foundation of their sound was a near-cacophonous, amelodic jagged jumble of guitars, sing-speak vocals, and keyboards (from Allmusic).
This EP was released in 7th of July 1986 by Beggar's Banquet label and it was recorded during the recordings for "Bend Sinister" LP.
The "Living too late" song was released in the cd version of  "Bend Sinister" later. All the three songs are high quality Fall-abilly with strong doses of psychedelia.
See also this post for the 1983 LP "Perverted by Language".

Tracklist
01. Living too late
02. Hot aftershave bop

03. Living too long

The songs were ripped from the vinyl record and since they are only three songs i decided to upload them in wav form. Much better quality of course.

The Birthday Party - The Bad Seed (EP 12", vinyl rip). 1983.

This EP, together with "Mutiny", was recorded in 1982 but released in 1983 and they are the last releases from The Birthday Party. All the blood and the pain and the fun is still here but this time there's something new...the blues!

Two of the songs here ("Deep in the woods" and "Wild world") are coming straight from the swamps of Mississippi - filtered of course by the maniac spirit of the band.

"Mostly featuring songs written by Cave and Harvey together, "Bad Seed" forecasts the imminent future of Nick Cave as a solo artist and Mick Harvey as his right-hand man in more than just title. Now down to a four-piece following the departure of Calvert, the Party weren't any less confrontational than before; the opening sounds one hears is Cave yelling, "Hands up, who wants to die?"!" (from Allmusic)

Ruts DC - Animal Now (LP, vinyl rip). 1981.

With their unique blend of raucous punk rock laced with reggae and dub, the Ruts were one of the most exciting bands to emerge from Britain's late-'70s scene.
Their sole album "The Crack" (1979) is among the pure punk rock masterpieces of all times.
Their career was cut cruelly short by the death of their singer Malcolm Owen in 1980, but still the group released six crucial singles and a seminal album in their short lifetime.
They were also a powerful force within Britain's Rock Against Racism movement, ensuring a political legacy at least as vital as their music.
The rise of the neo-Nazi National Front and its deliberate recruitment of young people, saw the bandmembers take on an increasingly political stance of their own, adding their own voice to the growing grassroots opposition to the fascist threat.

After Owen's death the remaining Ruts, Segs Jennings, Dave Ruffy and Paul Fox with the addition of sax player Gary Barnacle, kept things going using the name Ruts D.C and pushing the sound of The Ruts at its logical progression.
Their punk is more dark and their reggae is more dub!
This record is a forgotten treasure, one of the most fascinating records of the post punk scene.
